Guided by a Hia C-ed O’odham Elder, experience the age old tradition of harvesting cactus fruit in the beautiful Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Excursions are planned at the beginning of each summer when the fruit ripens.
Upon arrival you will meet other group members and set up camp. Then you learn from our Hia C-ed O’odham Elder how to make a ku:ipad (picking stick) in preparation for the next day’s harvest. Dinner is prepared on site. Social and educational time will complete the evening before you go to sleep under the stars.
At daybreak, breakfast will be served before harvesting begins. Several hours are spent picking the fruit. Afterwards, we will make a syrup from some of the harvest to enjoy over ice cream.
